After much hibernation....the blog is triggered by this topic...hands are itchy though time is tight....
Casino in Singapore?probably the hotest topic right now and you see everywhere people are commenting....and the repeated TV ads...really bugged me to write...
Let's start with all the good it'll bring us...provide jobs....bring in the tourists dollars and not losing out to all the countries who successfully implemented this form of entertainment....which is the objective of money rolling in....
But think abt the possible vast impact in exchange for jobs and $$$.... social ills is one of the most important factor in my opinion....breeding gamblers...possibly crimes and sucking not just the gamblers but also their significant others into this bottomless pit. I don't deny that creating jobs is beneficial...but if it were to solely bring in tourism bucks, doesn't it means that it is a tourism industry and thus affected by seasonal changes just like any other tourism industry and your salary dependent on the tourists? Thus ain't the salary reliant on tourists which ain't the safest bet if your salary is based on such a variable...which implies...poor business...results in retrenchment...it is a futile cycle i think...and the tourism industry is bleak....and being such a small home country...i can't deny we are not much of a tourists hotpick....and although the purpose is to bring in the tourist dollars...but the realistic truth is that most probably...a proportion of the stable revenue come from locals...gamblers probably will be cheering..bringing the gambling den right to their doorstep therefore encouraging and enticing them furthur...and predict how often they visit...just like the 'popular spot' at kranji....talking about horse racing....there are so many other legal gambling sources that i don't see why we need to add another one...successful ventures in other countries doesn't implies that it'll do just as well locally....and that other countries being significantly larger than Singapore...the social impact,etc...probably just affects a portionof the country where the casino lies....i think the popularity of casinoes in other countries does not lie in just it's entertainment....but also the location and the cculture of the particular country...example...genting on a mountain with theme parks...las vegas and it's vibrant night life...and not concentrated on solely the casino itself...and to sell a quality entertainment...it is also about quality hotels, etc...builing a family entertainment model...what we are talking about is the vast amount of investment in order to build such a model...and the figure will probably take many years before we start earning revenue...investing in casinoes....hotels...other leisure...that is a huge 'burden'...and not to forget our image...building on clean and green and pushing towards an education "hub"...aren't we contradicting ourselves with all sorts of gamblings right at our doorstep...i believe investing in other forms of investments like education is more far-fetching and positive on a long run basis....judging from the amount of risks and impacts we incur in return for the benefits....
like the spin of the roulette wheel....in a split second of time...and with a stroke of luck...it may be too quick and shocking to take in the results of our bet....
